Rain: Another 0.75 inches--But We Still Need More (April 5, 2013)

In the past couple of days we've had another 0.85 inches of rain. That brings our total for the 2012-2013 rain year to 24.55 inches. By this time of year we've had nearly 33 inches of rain in an average year, so we are more than 8 inches behind normal. We still need more rain, but this recent rain has been significant.

Rain: We Need More (March 31, 2012)

A hint of rain a few days ago and off-and-on showers last night have together added 0.30 inches to our precipitation total for the 2012-2013 rain year. The total at my Santa Rosa location is now 23.30 inches--still well below normal. We need more rain.

[Update: We got a little more rain, on April 1--an additional 0.40 inches, bringing the total as of April 2 to 23.70 inches. That's still low, but as improvement. More rain is in the forecast for the rest of this week.]

Rain--Showers This Week (March 22, 2013)

Showers earlier this week gave us some much-needed precipitation. Rain on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 19 and 20) added 0.55 inches to our total for the 2012-2013 rainy season. We have now had 23.00 inches at my location, although some locations have had a little more. That's considerably below normal for this date in Santa Rosa, which is over 31 inches. Average annual precipitation in Santa Rosa has been a little over 36 inches.

Rain: Storm Brought More Rain This Week (March 8, 2013)

Storms earlier in the week brought strong winds and a little more rain. We got 0.55 inches at my location. That brings our total for the 2012-2013 rain year to 23.45 inches. Average for this date in March is a little over 29 inches, so we are about 5.5 inches below normal now, having been nearly 10 inches ahead near the start of the season.

The historical average for today (February 10) in Santa Rosa is 23.11 inches. So, we are now slightly below normal for the year, having been about 10 inches ahead earlier in the season.

[Update: A heavy downpour on the morning of the 15th added 0.45 inches of new rain, bringing the total for this season to 22.90 inches.]

Rain: Additional 0.4 inches (January 6, 2013)

Since last reporting, we've had another 0.4 inches of rain, bringing our total for the 2012/2013 rainy season to 21.65 inches (at least at my house). As 15.4 inches is average for this calendar date, were are about six inches above normal so far.

Rain: And Thunder and Lightning (December 21-22, 2012)

An electrical storm last night (unusual here in Santa Rosa) dropped another 2.85 inches on us. That brings our 2012-2013 rainy season total to 17.70 inches. Normal for this date is about 11.5 inches, so we are way ahead so far. Historical average annual rainfall for Santa Rosa is about 36 inches, we're half way there.

[Update: Very heavy rain fell during the morning and early afternoon today, December 23--some of it about the heaviest downpour I've ever witnessed. We've had another 2.30 inches since the report above. That brings our total as of the evening of the 23rd to 20.00 inches.]

[Update: More rain on Christmas Day added another 1.25 inches, bringing the total to 21.25 inches.]

Rain: More Drizzle and Rain--and More on the Way (December 17, 2012)

We've had more rain and drizzle in the past couple of days, particularly on the 16th. The rain gauge has another 0.9 inches in it. That brings our total so far in the 2012/2013 rain year to 14.85 inches, well ahead of normal. Today was clear, but more rain is on the way....

Rain: Late Season Rain Adds 0.15 Inches to 2011-2012 Total

In a somewhat surprising turn of the weather, we had rain overnight. Late this afternoon, it's clear and sunny again with only large cumulus clouds in the distance. It came quickly and left quickly as well--likely the last rain we'll have in the 2011-2012 season, which officially ends on June 30. The 0.15 inches we got brings our total to 26.45 inches--not bad, but below the historical average, which is a little under 32 inches.

Rain: A Little More Rain (May 3, 2012)

We got a little more rain yesterday, May 3. The rain gauge collected 0.15 inches, which brings our total for the 2011-2012 rainy season to 26.30 inches. That's respectable, but still on the low side. The historical annual average for Santa Rosa is just under 32 inches.

Rain: Overnight Drizzle Adds 0.10 Inches

A little rain overnight. The rain gauge shows 0.10 inches fell. That brings the 2011-2012 total to 26.15 inches--still well below normal, but not enough below to be too alarming. Average annual rainfall in Santa Rosa is just under 32 inches.

Rain: Rain--and Hail

The last of the recent storms has now passed through. Beautiful, clear, sunny day today in Santa Rosa--a sharp contrast to yesterday's heavy rain and pea-sized hail. Yesterday's precipitation added 0.20 inches to the 2011-2012 rainy season total, which now stands at 26.05 inches (at least at my house). That's still well below the annual average for Santa Rosa, which is around 32 inches, but much better than looked likely as recently and the end of February. Despite the nice weather today, I've mostly been stuck indoors working. I hope I'll have something more interesting to write about once current projects are out of the way, delivered to clients.

Rain: Better late than never (April 9-12, 2012)

It started raining last night. The forecast is for rain the next few days. Normally we get comparatively little rain after the end of March, but any addition is welcome, as we're still considerably below normal for the 2011-2012 rainy season (which ends on June 30). We've had 0.95 inches now since last reporting. That brings us to 24.30 inches for the season. Average annual rainfall in Santa Rosa, California is 31.91 inches, so we are still about seven and a half inches below where we should be, but at least we're approaching the normal range

[Update: Heavy rain on the night of the 11th. We got another 0.95 inches overnight. The total now stands at 25.20 inches for the season.]

[Further update: An additional 0.65 inches on the 12th brings the total to 25.85 inches for the 2011-2012 rainy season. We're getting there...."]

Rain: Another 0.45 Inches (March 30-31, 2012)

We got another 0.45 inches of rain last night and this morning. The sun is out now. The plants look green, healthy, swollen with water, ready to burst into bloom, the way they do each spring. We are still well below normal, but the upcoming summer looks increasingly less likely to be dire. More rain is predicted for the coming week. Our 2011-2012 total now stands at 23.10 inches. Still, that's 8.8 inches below average.

[Update: Another 0.25 inches on the 31st brings us to 23.35 inches for the season.]

Rain: Another 1.35 inches (March 26-27, 2012)

More rain last night and the night before. We got a total of 1.35 inches of new precipitation. That brings the 2010-2011 rainy season total to 22.65 inches. That's better than it looked like we were going to get, but still decidedly on the low side. The average annual rainfall for Santa Rosa is 31.91 inches, so we are at present 9.25 inches below normal. As most of our rainfall comes between October and the end of March, we're unlikely to get a lot more, but rain remains in the forecast for the rest of the week. We'll see.

Rain: Yet More Rain (March 24-25, 2012)

It's been raining off and on since last night--not heavily, but enough that we've already accumulated about half an inch. The forecast is for showers over the next week. This is likely to be our last chance to catch up before the dry season begins in June (although we get sporadic rain in April and May, and a good storm in the coming weeks could be significant, we've typically had most of our rain for the year by the end of March).

Checking the rain gauge on the morning of the 25th, I see that we got 1.25 inches yesterday and overnight. That brings our 2011-2012 rainy season total to 21.30 inches. The historical average for March 25 is 31.68 inches in Santa Rosa. The historical annual average is 31.91 inches--which means that by now we've usually had nearly all the rain we're going to get, so it seems likely that we'll end the rainy season about 10 inches below normal.

Rain: A Little More Rain (March 21-22, 2012)

Overnight last night we got a little more rain--although not enough to make much of a difference. The rain gauge had 0.15 inches in it this morning. That brings our 2011-2012 total to 20.05 inches. It feels good to finally be above 20 inches, but we should have had close to 30 inches by this time of year. We still need more. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend. Hoping for the best....

Rain: 0.75 inches Overnight (March 12-16, 2012)

Rain again, finally. It looks like we'll get a few inches this time--rain we very much need. There was 0.75 inches in the rain gauge last night, but I haven't yet updated the totals because it's still raining. I hope we can add two to three inches to our annual total, at least. We're still more than 10 inches behind.

[Update: As of noon on the 14th, we have had 3.30 inches of much-needed rain, and it's still raining. The forecast is for precipitation to continue for the next couple of days. Perhaps there's some hope of avoiding a very droughty summer this year after all. So far, the total now stands at 18.00 inches. We are currently 12.3 inches below normal for this date. The historical average for March 14th in Santa Rosa is 30.29 inches. Unfortunately, our annual average is 31.91 inches, which means that normally by this date we've already had nearly 95% of the rain we're going to get. The chances of making up 12 inches in the coming weeks seem slim, even if we pick up a couple more inches in the next few days.

An additional 1.9 inches fell overnight on the 15th. We are now at 19.90 inches--better, but still not enough. Hoping for more....]

Rain: 0.75 inches Overnight (February 28-29, 2012)

Finally, a little more rain last night. We got only 0.75 inches, but anything is welcome. The rain last night brings our total for the 2011-2012 rainy season to only 14.25 inches, which is nearly 13.4 inches below normal for the end of February in Santa Rosa (27.64 inches). Annual average rainfall in Santa Rosa is 31.91 inches. The 2011-2012 rainy season officially ends June 30, 2012.

[Update: On the night of February29-March 1, we got an additional 0.40 inches of rain, bringing the annual total to 14.65 inches--still woefully short of normal.]
