Plants I'm Growing: First Blooms—Two-toned Daffodils, Pluot "Dapple Dandy," Ceanothus "Ray Hartman" 2017

In the past couple of weeks, spring has sprung around here. On February 16, the pluot "Dapple Dandy" started to bloom. With heavy rains it went into a state of suspended animation shortly afterward, but it's in full bloom now. I'm hoping the rain won't have reduced the crop. The fruit is delicious, and rain during bloom can cause poor fruit set. February 19 brought the first blossoms on the two-toned daffodils in the front garden. The ceanothus "Ray Hartman" began blooming the following day, on March 20.

Plants I'm Growing: First Blooms--Pluot "Dapple Dandy" (February 23, 2013)

The first blossoms on the pluot called "Dapple Dandy" opened a couple days ago, on February 23. With no rain in the forecast, I'm hoping the tree will set some fruit this year. In recent years it has had almost none--but it  has mostly rained during flowering. The beehive has died, unfortunately, so the usual pollinators won't be around, but I'm hoping for the best. This post is, in fact, late because for the past few days I've been struggling to get the honey harvested from the hive; without the bees to attend it, it can't be left to sit (details of the honey harvest to follow).

Also, the first of the Tulipa bakeri tulips in the garden opened today (February 25). These have gradually dwindled in number and the number of blossoms on each plant has lessened as well. Probably time to plant new ones, or to fertilize the ones in the ground.

Plants I'm Growing--First Blooms: Prunus Blireiana, Pluot "Dapple Dandy"

Our double pink-flowering plum tree (Prunus blireana) and the pluot "Dapple Dandy" started blooming the day before yesterday, February 4. The flowers were coaxed out by suddenly warmer weather--it got up to 80 degrees in Santa Rosa today and it was in the mid-70s yesterday. The pink plum bloomed on February 17 in 2009, but I can't find a record for 2010. Relative to 2009, however, the plant has bloomed somewhat early. I'm still not sure what "normal" is.

"Dapple Dandy" bloomed on February 15 in 2010, for a year of 354 days. The tree first bloomed on February 5 in 2009, for a year of 355 days. I hope the rains will hold off during the bloom period this year. It's been several years since the tree has produced a decent crop of fruit.

Plants I'm Growing: Pluot "Dapple Dandy"

Prodded by a suddenly warm day, many buds on the "Dapple Dandy" pluot burst today. Last year, the flowers were hit by virtually constant rain during flowering. The result was almost no fruit following a bumper crop the preceding year. I don't know if the rain was really to blame or if the heavy fruiting of the year before was more the cause. In any case, I'm hoping that this year we'll be able to harvest something. The fruit is excellent when fully ripe--usually in mid-August.

"Dapple Dandy" bloomed on February 5 in 2009, for a fairly short year of 355 days.
