I belatedly report on some of the plants that have recently started blooming in the garden. February 5 brought the first blooms this year on the pink flowering plum behind the house (Prunus blireana) on the golden currant bush (Ribes aureum). The pluot "Dapple Dandy" (top) began blooming on February 11 this year.
"Dapple Dandy" bloomed on February 5, 15, 4, 2, 23, and 3 in 2009 to 2014, so a first bloom date of February 11 is neither early nor late.
The plum has bloomed on February 17, 11, 2, and 15 in past years, so February 5 is on the early side but within the normal range.
The golden currant has bloomed as early as February 10 (in 2011) and as late as March 5 (2013), so a first bloom date of February 5 is somewhat earlier than usual.

Plants I'm Growing--First Blooms: Dwarf Peach, Dwarf Nectarine, Tulipa Bakeri (February 2015)
Plants are coming into bloom in rapid succession in the garden and I'm already behind in keeping track, but here I note that the Dwarf Peach Tree in the side yard started blooming this year on February 16 (top photo). The Dwarf Nectarine started blooming on February 18 (second photo). Our Flavor King Pluot (not shown) began blooming on the 17th. The few remaining species tulips in the front garden (Tulipa bakeri) started blooming this year on February 20 (bottom).

Plants I'm Growing: 2014 "Flavor King" Pluots
The day before yesterday I was standing on the deck behind the house and noticed a large bird in our fig tree. It flew a dozen feet and landed in the little "Flavor King" pluot tree in our back yard, picking at the fruit. That was annoying, but I was glad to see the bird because it was a Black-headed Grosbeak, a species I've never seen in the garden--although I've heard them singing nearby before.
So, birds were taking notice and fruit was beginning to fall: I decided to harvest. I took about 100 pluots off the tree. They're delicious fresh, but it may be time to make jam again.

Plants I'm Growing: Summer Bounty (July 26, 2013)
The summer of 2013 has been a good one in the garden. We had wonderful early figs and a second crop is forming. The "Santa Rosa" plum tree produced several hundred delicious fruits. There is fruit on the "Dapple Dandy" pluot tree for the first time in years, Apples and pears are on the way. The "Flavor Queen" pluot is heavily laden with fruit (above). The new vegetable garden where the lawn used to be is producing greens, and the first tomatoes are just ripening. Edamame and green beens will be ready soon. We've had summer squash and zucchini and more lemon cucumbers than we can consume. The grapes, which set a lot of fruit this year, are just beginning to show some color in the past couple of days; veraison, as the French call it, has just begun. I've finished clearing weeds and debris from under the vines. The electric fence around the grapes is working and turned on. Time to get the nets on--before the critters begin to show interest in the fruit.

Plants I'm Growing: In the Garden (March 5, 2013)
Activity is beginning to pick up in the garden, although it's started pouring with rain today, which will likely ruin the flowers on the fruit trees. In the past few days, the Flavor Queen pluot and the Santa Rosa plum have come into bloom. The golden current (Ribes aureum) is in full bloom (photo below). The manzanitas are blooming, and the dwarf peach and nectarine behind the house are coming into bloom as well (photo above).

Plants I'm Growing: First Blooms--Pluot "Dapple Dandy" (February 23, 2013)
The first blossoms on the pluot called "Dapple Dandy" opened a couple days ago, on February 23. With no rain in the forecast, I'm hoping the tree will set some fruit this year. In recent years it has had almost none--but it has mostly rained during flowering. The beehive has died, unfortunately, so the usual pollinators won't be around, but I'm hoping for the best. This post is, in fact, late because for the past few days I've been struggling to get the honey harvested from the hive; without the bees to attend it, it can't be left to sit (details of the honey harvest to follow).
Also, the first of the Tulipa bakeri tulips in the garden opened today (February 25). These have gradually dwindled in number and the number of blossoms on each plant has lessened as well. Probably time to plant new ones, or to fertilize the ones in the ground.

Plants I'm Growing: First Blooms--"Flavor King" Pluot
The first buds on our "Flavor King" pluot opened the day before yesterday, on February 19. There has been so little rain this year that I'm hoping we'll actually get an appreciable crop this year. In the past two years it rained heavily while this and our other plum and pluot trees were in bloom, which resulted in a tiny crop. We'll see. The plant bloomed on February 5 in 2009, february 15 in 2010, February 13 in 2011, and February 19 this year, calculating years of 375, 363, and 371 days, for an average so far of about 370 days, somewhat longer than an actual year, but I suspect this will average downward over time.

Plants I'm Growing--First Blooms: Santa Rosa Plum, "Flavor King" Pluot, "Pink Snowflakes" Rhododendron
A number of plants have come into bloom in the garden in the past couple of days: the Santa Rosa Plum I planted two years ago as a pollinator for the pluots, the "Flavor King" Pluot, and the "Pink Snowflakes" rhododendron. The pluot Dapple Dandy" is now in full bloom as well.
"Flavor King" began to bloom on February 13, the Santa Rosa plum on February 14, and "Pink Snowflakes" today (February 16). The Santa Rosa plum is in the first photo, the pluot "Flavor King" in the second. "Pink Snowflakes" is below. The Santa Rosa plum calculated a year of 356 days this year, 364 days last year. "Flavor King" calculated a year of 363 days this year, 375 days last year. "Pink Snowflakes" calculated a year of 357 days this year, 367 days last year. Interestingly these six data points average to just under 364 days, very close to an actual year.

Plants I'm Growing--First Blooms: Prunus Blireiana, Pluot "Dapple Dandy"
Our double pink-flowering plum tree (Prunus blireana) and the pluot "Dapple Dandy" started blooming the day before yesterday, February 4. The flowers were coaxed out by suddenly warmer weather--it got up to 80 degrees in Santa Rosa today and it was in the mid-70s yesterday. The pink plum bloomed on February 17 in 2009, but I can't find a record for 2010. Relative to 2009, however, the plant has bloomed somewhat early. I'm still not sure what "normal" is.

Plants I'm growing: First blooms--Pluot "Flavor King" and Osmanthus x Burkwoodii
I report belatedly that the pluot "Flavor King" and Osmanthus x burkwoodii both started blooming yesterday. Activity has picked up markedly in the garden in the last couple of days with a lull in the rain and warmer weather. It was in the high 60s again today. The Osmanthus bloomed on February 18 in 2009. So, a year according to this plant was 362 days, or close to a calendar year. The photo here is a view of the plant in full bloom in 2009.
The pluot is a trifle problematic. One or two flowers opened in isolation about two weeks ago, which is typical, but a significant number of buds broke today for the first time. Last year, an isolated flower bloomed on February 5th, but I didn't note the start of the real flowering, so my data from last year and this year don't really mesh. Roughly speaking, however, the timing of both the first flower and of the fuller flowering appear to be in line with last year.

Plants I'm Growing: Pluot "Dapple Dandy"
Prodded by a suddenly warm day, many buds on the "Dapple Dandy" pluot burst today. Last year, the flowers were hit by virtually constant rain during flowering. The result was almost no fruit following a bumper crop the preceding year. I don't know if the rain was really to blame or if the heavy fruiting of the year before was more the cause. In any case, I'm hoping that this year we'll be able to harvest something. The fruit is excellent when fully ripe--usually in mid-August.
"Dapple Dandy" bloomed on February 5 in 2009, for a fairly short year of 355 days.
