I visited the farmers' market at the Veteran's Building in Santa Rosa today, today being Saturday. I had thought it might be very busy with people in the area from out of town for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but it turned out to be fairly quiet. There was a lot of beautiful fruit on display and for sale. If the day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday," I wonder what the following Saturday should be called? "Black Saturday"? I imagine the stores were still busy with shoppers, but the market was the extent of my shopping for the holiday.

Found Art: Fish Colors (April 3, 2010)

More found art from the Santa Rosa Farmers' Market (Saturdays and Wednesdays, 8:00AM to noon, all year 'round, rain or shine, in the parking lot of the Veteran's Memorial Building, across the street from the Fairgrounds).
Sometimes the food we eat is astonishingly beautiful. I loved the spots on this salmon and the bright stripes on the halibut. Pretty--although maybe not quite as pretty as the flowering trees that are everywhere right now?

Found Art: Honeycomb (March 30, 2010)
At the Santa Rosa Farmers Market this week one of the beekeepers brought in some comb that a swarm of bees made in one of his hive boxes last year. It was like a sculpture or an architectural model. Something made me think of Gaudi and Barcelona--where I plan to be this summer.
Notice the two different sizes of cells. The smaller cells in the front are ordinary brood cells, used to raise worker bees and also to store honey and pollen. The larger cells at the back are drawn for raising drones. Drone (male) bees are considerably bigger than worker (female) bees. Found art. Beautiful.

Miscellaneous: Farmers' Market
Went to the Saturday farmers' market in Santa Rosa this week, as I try to do when I can, usually shortly before closing at around noon. Bought oysters for dinner tonight, checked out the tomato plants (found "Purple Plum," one of my favorites), and talked to the beekeepers. There was a man with a display hive--not a usual feature of the market--the sort with honeycomb between glass, so you can see what's going on inside. It reminded me of the one that used to be at the Dayton Museum of Natural History. On visits to Ohio from New York to visit my Grandmother, the museum was always a highlight. Last time I saw the museum in Dayton, they had destroyed the place.
