Found Art: Battered Air Conditioner (April 10, 2013)

It's not often that you see an old-fashioned air conditioner pushed into a window around here. It's not hot enough at night. I remember these mostly from New York, long ago. This one, in a San Anselmo store window, has been battered about rather thoroughly, but the crushed vanes created a rather interesting pattern, I thought. Found art.

Found Art: Two Arrows (February 12, 2013)

Roadway arrows fascinate me. I don't know why. These two must have seemed confident and assertive when new. Now they are old and worn away, one overlaid with the other, this second one a newer, younger arrow that itself has faded. Looked like art to me.

Found Art: Textured Parking Garage Floor, Santa Rosa (April 2, 2012)

Parking garages frequently use heavy texturing on their floors to prevent slipping. This pattern created an intriguing surface. Dark and light patches complete the composition. Found art.

Found Art: Velvet in a Clarinet Case (March 10, 2012)

My son is a clarinetist. At his weekly lesson recently I noticed the patterns on the velvet inside his teacher's clarinet case. I liked the soft sheen. I liked the impressions made in the material from years of cradling clarinet parts. Found art.

Found Art: Pebbles and Sand (February 18, 2012)

Pebbles and tracings of the water flow they helped to create. Ephemeral art, found art. Near San Simeon, California, at the start of 2012.

Found Art: Razor Wire, Barbed Wire (January 27, 2012)

Razor wire and barbed wire, tools of exclusion or incarceration, would seem remote from art, but I liked the rhythms formed here by the overlapping coils of razor wire and by the barbed wire and wall behind them. Art is where you find it.

Found Art: Liquidambar Seed Pods, Santa Rosa (January 16, 2012)

I recently saw these seed pods on a liquidambar, or sweet gum, tree. They reminded me very much of some of the photographs of Karl Blossfeldt. Found art.

Found Art: San Francisco Show Window (January 2, 2012)

I was in San Francisco on New Year's Eve. Oddly, Union Square was completely closed off and nothing was going on. I enjoyed looking at some of the store windows, though. I particularly liked this one. Found art.

Found Art: Drain Cover and Green and White Paint (December 6, 2011)

Walking along a street in Healdsburg recently, I came across this little composition. I love the splash of green paint on the iron drain cover, the splash of white paint on the sidewalk beside it. Found art.

Found Art: Glass and Shadow (November 7, 2011)

A few weeks ago I went wine tasting in Napa with a guest from Japan. At Opus One there is a covered balcony that overlooks the vineyards. The shadows of the lattice overhead and my empty glass looked like art to me. Found Art.

Found Art: Battered Trash Can, Sebastopol, October 23, 2011

Even a battered trash can be beautiful. I saw this black plastic trash can at Analy High School, in Sebastopol. Painted white, an interesting pattern has been etched away through use. Found art.

Found Art: Smeared Paint (October 11, 2011)

I photograph all kinds of things that interest me visually. Occasionally, I forget where. I'm not sure where I saw this paint-smeared surface, but I was attracted to its unintended rhythms and its subtle colors. Found art.

Found Art: Shadows and Light (September 15, 2011)

At a gallery not long ago, I saw this pattern of shadows and light on the floor. It was more interesting than the work hanging on the walls--but, art is where you find it.

Found Art: Water Access Cover and Paint Mark (September 2, 2011)

A water access cover with a stray paint mark nearby that somehow creates a tension transforming this little scene into art. The colored paint on the metal lid is part of its charm--not to mention the cracks and seams in the cement.... Found art.

Found Art: Tree Bark, Shevlin Park, Bend, Oregon (August 16, 2011)

On my recent trip through central Oregon and north to Vancouver Island I stopped to do some walking at Shevlin Park, in Bend, Oregon. I enjoyed the miles of trails, the river that runs through the park, and the many birds I saw there. There were some huge evergreen trees with beautiful bark. Found art.

Found Art: PG&E Cable Truck (July 12, 2011)

Not long ago I was in Geyserville for the first time in a long time. I visited an interesting little wine bar called Locals. Parked across the street was a PG&E cable truck with large wheels of cable mounted on the back. Looked like art to me. Found art.

Found Art: Painted Tree Trunk, Calistoga (June 27, 2011)

On a recent trip to Calistoga and some of the other small towns in the area, I took a walk around the grounds of the Indian Springs resort. Big palm trees are planted all around the property. The bases have all been painted white. I liked the texture, the shadows. Found Art.

Found Art: Green Shed with Insulator, Santa Rosa, May 31, 2011

On a walk around the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery not long ago, I found this little scene on the side of a green shed. It looked like a collage or a small sculpture. Found art.
