Art I'm Looking At: Seiko Tachibana on the Art Wall at Shige Sushi, Cotati (June 2 through August 2, 2015)

In my role as a curator, I'll next be showing the work of Oakland-based artist Seiko Tachibana on the Art Wall at Shige Sushi in Cotati. The show opens this coming Tuesday, June 2 and will run through August 2. Artist reception Monday, June 8.

Seiko Tachibana completed her Master of Art Education degree at Kobe University, Japan. She received an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute and has since received many awards for the body of her work. She has had many solo and group exhibitions internationally. Her distinctive art balances Asian tradition with minimalist modernity. Her work shows an interest in a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, mixed media, and printmaking. Among printmaking techniques, she is a master of intaglio processes, particularly aquatint. Tachibana’s prints are in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum, The Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, and the Portland Museum of Art, among others. She is widely collected in the US, Europe, and Japan. In the Bay Area, Tachibana is represented by the Ren Brown Collection, in Bodega Bay.

Art I'm Looking At: Suzanne Jacquot on the Art Wall at Shige Sushi--Opening Reception (April 6, 2015)

We had a successful opening last night at Shige Sushi. One of the guests, a musician, brought along flutes and gave us some unexpected live music. Most of the attendees were themselves artists, which resulted in some lively discussion about the work. Jacquot's abstract paintings are notable for their command of composition and expressive use of color. I especially like the way her work combines gestural detail with diffuse color fields that work on a larger scale. The combination creates a dynamic between close examination of the finer elements and a simultaneous assessment of the surrounding visual field.

The show runs through May 31 on The Art Wall at Shige Sushi. For more information about art at Shige Sushi, including information about upcoming shows, about purchasing art, or about submitting art for consideration for display on The Art Wall, visit http://ctalcroft.wix.com/artwallatshige/.

Art I'm Looking At: "The Art of Collage" on the Art Wall at Shige Sushi (Dec. 6, 2014 - Jan. 31, 2015)

A sushi bar in the middle of downtown Cotati--Shige Sushi (8235 Old Redwood Highway, Cotati, CA 94931 (707) 795-9753)--has recently given me a free hand to curate small art shows on one wall of the restaurant. I've just finished organizing the first show and designing announcements for it--The Art of Collage--which will run from December 6, 2014 to January 31, 2015. There will be a meet-the-artists reception from around 7:00PM on Wednesday, December 17. The show includes collage works by Claude Smith, Sherry Parker and me. Claude's work, using Xerox transfer printing and other monoprinting techniques is bold and gestural in some instances, cryptically narrative in others, but always arresting. Sherry Parker's collages, mostly using found pictorial elements, combine whimsy, the surreal, and an exquisite design sense. I'm looking forward to sharing the work of these outstanding artists with the community and to organizing future shows for the new Art Wall at Shige Sushi.
